Tournament & Skills Competition Rules

  1. If the Referee determines there is a colour conflict (e.g. colours too closely matched), one team must provide alternate shirts or pinnies - your cooperation appreciated.
  2. Teams may not include players from higher age levels.
  3. All games will start and finish on time - no exceptions.  An air horn will sound to signify the start of each game.
  4. A complete team roster must be handed in at the scorers' tent, one-half hour before the start of your first game.
  5. Any player or coach receiving a red card will be suspended from the tournament and be subject to their District's discipline process.
  6. Referees decisions will be final.  No protests will be accepted.
  7. All games will start promptly every 45 minutes as per the tournament schedule. Games will be played with two-sixteen minute halves.  U-11 and U-12 will have a 5 minute half time.  There will be NO half time for all other age divisions.  The teams will change ends as the Referee picks up the ball and drops it at centre.  The game will continue on whether the teams are ready or not, so be prepared for a very quick half-time turnaround.
  8. The Referee's whistle will sound at the start of each half whether both teams are ready or not.
  9. Games will be played on a full, standard-sized field, except for the U11H, U13SA-2 and U13SB groups, all of whom play on ½ of our new turf field.
  10. 7 players per side, including a goalie, will play on the field.
  11. There is no offside rule.
  12. Player substitutions are to be made on the fly.
  13. All balls that go out of bounds will be kicked in, not thrown in.
  14. All substitutions must be made within 10 yards of the centre line (on the team's side of the field). There must be hand contact between the player coming off and the player going on.
  15. Play will only be stopped for fouls and serious injuries.  Coaches are to assist injured players off the field, then make necessary substitutions.  (Common sense on the referees part will prevail, i.e. If the injury is serious the game will stop).
  16. Immediately after each game, there will be a shoot-out competition.  A description of this and the other special events is attached (Events Rules). Due to time limitations, this skills competition must be done promptly.

Game Scoring

Points are awarded for games according to the following rules:

  • 6 points for a win
  • 3 points for a tie
  • 0 points for a loss
  • 1 point for a shutout
  • 1 point per goal to a maximum of 3 in a game

Skills Competition

1. End of Game Shoot-Outs

At the conclusion of each game, a shoot-out competition will be held comprised of 5 shooters from each team, with all shots taken from the penalty kick spot.

Scoring = 1 point per goal scored, 5 points per game shoot-out maximum.

Shooters <=> shooters are to be rotated for each game through the team's roster. That is, if a team carries 15 or more players, each player should have had the opportunity of taking 1 penalty shot (note: this includes the goalie). For those teams with less than 15 players, the repeat shooters may be chosen from random selection. For those teams with greater than 15 players, some will simply not be eligible to shoot.

2. Breakaway/Goalie Challenge

This skills competition involves a breakaway shot/goalie challenge and is referred to in your tournament schedule as Station 1.

This skills competition takes place between Field 9 (immediately east of the Fieldhouse) and Field 10 (turf field).

Each team is to pick 5 players for a 1 on 1 breakaway shot challenge versus the other scheduled team's goalie.

Scoring = 1 point per goal scored, 5 points maximum.

If time permits (as solely determined by the skills competitions supervisors), additional players may try this competition but only the first 5 player's results will count.

3. Shot Accuracy

This skills competition involves a shot accuracy competition and is referred to in your tournament schedule as Station 2.

This skills competition takes place at the south end of Field 10 (turf field), near the (north) green storage container.

Each team is to pick 10 players for this competition, with each player taking 2 shots.

Scoring = ½ point per successful shot scored, 5 points per team maximum.

If time permits (as solely determined by the skills competitions supervisors), additional players may try this competition but only the first 10 player's results will count.

It is imperative that your team participate in the skills competition at their designated time as stated on your tournament schedule. These points can make the difference in your team's results!
