The U14 Metro Semiahmoo Thunder went into this season as the BC Provincial Cup defending champions for the past two seasons.
This years’ qualification for the Coastal Cup A Championship game was the third year in a row that the Thunder appeared in this game, winning in 2007 and losing in a shootout in 2008.
The road to the Championship game was a tough one for the Thunder as the draw was a very difficult one, having to go through Langley FC, the North Shore Caps and then defeating league champion Richmond Red Hot Selects in overtime 2 – 0 before meeting the Vancouver Chaos in the final. The Thunder put massive pressure on the Chaos early in the game, finally scoring after numerous chances at the 7 minute mark of the first half. The play was relatively even until late in the second half when the Thunder scored again with 6 minutes to play in the game to finish the scoring. In four Coastal Cup games, the Thunder did not allow any goals against, outscoring the competition 10 – 0.
The Thunder will meet the representative from the Interior on July 4th in a one-game qualification match to represent British Columbia in the Canadian National Championships which take place in Nova Scotia in October.
